This movie does not pretend to be more than what it is— a lighthearted walk down an old and familiar path. Negative criticism of this movie takes two forms: (1) a predictable romantic comedy that isn’t funny and or have complex characters or (2) a shallow stereotype of Asians. Both criticisms are not without merit, yet they both overlook the actual film. This is a true classic romantic comedy that makes you chuckle a couple of times and focuses on a love story complicated by contrived plot devices. In short, it is a romantic comedy. As to the stereotypical portrayal of Asian culture, it is there if you want it be but it is just as readily apt to socialite elitist culture. The choice is truly up to the viewer. Ultimately, if you want an easy watch that feels like an old friend you haven’t seen in a while, then give it a try. If you prefer a drama that explores the dynamics between old money and no money + eastern culture and western culture, you’d be better off researching the issues. I wanted to watch a movie and I am glad that I chose this one.
