Of the many cinematic versions of Kipling’s tales I’ve seen, “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle”, streaming on Netflixt has entertained me the most so far. The original Disney animated musical comes in second and the most recent Jungle Book movie with the CG character who reprises “I Wanna Be Like You” dead last. This film’s title lured me into what I thought would be familiar territory and revealed anything but. Armed with a tight script, outstanding cast and well placed details Andy Serkis has crafted a movie that may not be your 10-year-old’s movie but could definitely be yours. Who knew Shere Khan had a gimpy leg? I found it difficult to accept the animated motion capture at first becaus the animal characters had stiff coats. Yet, the fine acting behind the technology and eagerly paced storyline quickly led me to suspend disbelief. Cate Blanchett was perfectly cast.
