It's clear that director Taika Waititi wanted to keep this film tonally distinct from its predecessor. While still absurd and full of goofy moments, this one's been framed as an '80s space romance... there's more magic, colour, and soul in the recipe.
The cast shines through, although the chemistry between leads Hemsworth and Portman seems to have dimmed down in the years they haven't worked together. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie is still underrated, and it would've been nice to see more character development for her. Christian Bale too, gets too little screentime as the terrifying God Butcher. I personally would've loved the first act to be iced with scenes of him actually hunting down the gods, one by one.
But with a restricted runtime and so many characters and touchpoints to cover, the movie does feel a little messy at times. The chaos can also seem self-referential, and I didn't mind it per se.
Overall, it's a fun venture, and I'm happy to see Thor on his own journey, not tied down to the happenings of the larger MCU at present, which honestly seems to be in a bit of a creative puddle right now.
