What might have been an enormous spiritual tragedy told with heart-breaking power is denied us by the hum-drum dismissal of the tragic love affair central to the book’s emotional power. An unforgettable read, with a flawed payoff.

The subject matter could hardly be more fascinating. However each case describes the same loss of self—. Over and over again. There seems to be no cure for the problem not even speculation about what might be done if there were an accurate diagnosis. Good material handled with frustrating intellection.
