I read the book shortly after it was published. I was 15 years old myself and I kept rooting for Alice as I read further, and I became frustrated with her because she kept messing up. A lot of my high school friends read the book and we all agreed that Alice was crazy to have gotten involved in the situations she did, especially with such a good family. Toward the end of the book, it seemed like Alice pulled through and it was a real downer that she didn't make it. When I later learned it was a work of fiction, I was actually relieved. At the time, I felt Go ask Alice was more than a story about drugs. It was lesson on just how valuable life is.
