I greatly enjoyed the first season. The cast and characters are great. The story progresses in a very unique way, which by the end of the season will make sense. I found the use of time rather ingenious once I understood the flow, which took me about 3 episodes. If you’re a fan of the games and books, you will love this show.
If this is your introduction to Witcher, let me set your expectations. First, any review that compares Witcher to Game of Thrones is just plain wrong. The stories are vastly different. Different kind of story, different characters, told in a much different way.. I have read other reviews that compare it to The Mandalorian because the main characters are dark, brooding people navigating their respectively hostile worlds. Again, very different world and story in Witcher. There is no Baby Yoda character. The world of the Witcher is much grimmer than Star Wars. The Witcher is a story all it’s own. And if it seems stark, grim, and overstated at times, that’s kind of the point. The genius of the show, like the books from which it comes, derives not from trumpeting Well-worn cliches from the battlements, which it does, but from exploring our responses and interactions with them in new and surprising ways.
All that to say, if you’re new to Witcher, I think you’ll like it too. Just don’t mistake it for a Game of Thrones knockoff. Watch it for what it is and you will be rewarded.
