As has already been mentioned, this is the slightly more grown up version of Star Trek, as neatly highlighted by Georgio's character when she tells Leland, I want to hear you scream.....NOW. The Effects are visually as good as anything else including the cinema at the moment, and the plot line for season 2 neatly wrapped up most of the outstanding issue's. Difficult to see where season 3 will go with Discovery now that its 900 years into the future, where does this place it within the other Star Trek series timelines.
