This story just adds to the cultural chauvinism. It shows all and only the "good" things of Indian culture and how Indian culture is "better" than American. This movie actually promotes the one thing i hate about our culture ; Tovinos character tells the American tourist how he struggled in life , and that he had to take a loan for his sister's studies to which Cathy asks why the sister didn't take the loan on her own and not depent on him , to which tovino replies with the cliche sentiments on how he cares about them a lot and that in Indian Culture , we give a lot of value for relationships BUT this statement essentially means "male child has to take full responsibility and the daughters are dolls made of glass , who has to be taken care of." Isn't this the same thing we are trying to change. We truely value personal relationships when we actually respect and not under/overestimate people's abilities, its actually high time that our girls learn they are to stand on their feet and there is nothing wrong with it , infact thats what they MUST do , even if they don't want to, (you can't just expect someone to always have your back)and also its not for the male to takeup all the responsibilities and just live for others. If only we could keep these gender based egos aside and move respecting and valuing everyones efforts and potentials. .
