As a history lover and literature enthusiast, this movie did an incredible job. They kept the political complexity down (sorry for those who love political dramas). It seems to me those reviewing the film have a very specific view of who Napoleon was: war hero, cruel dictator, passionate lover, colonial warlord haha. People color Napoleon the way they see Napoleon, which is what we all do with historical figures. But everyone has their own version of a single man. This film attempts to neutralize Napoleon's character on these views to the point where people are either A) curious to learn more about Napoleon, or B) upset the movie didn't portray THEIR version of Napoleon. Those in the first camp, I am convinced, walked away from this movie holding it to be a wondrous achievement, and that is precisely what it was. Its realistic depictions of war, its clever and appropriate use of classical music, its artistic portrayal of Napoleon's revolve and self-esteem, weave together to bring to life a figure who undoubtedly used his imagination to rule the world. Phenomenal.
