I enjoyed this movie very much. There were certain aspects I wished would have been a smoother transition when going from different scenes but it was funny, enjoyable, and overall an entertaining movie to watch. Most reviews that are 1 star based on what I have mostly read contains racist and homophobic comments made about the characters and not truly about the movie itself. For someone that actually watched the movie for just that, a movie (not people who assume it’s some political agenda), it is a beautiful piece. Animation was phenomenal, props to the animators. There are goofy moments amongst the characters and I found that to be great comedic relief for some of the heavier topics they addressed in the movie.
For those thinking this movie’s target audience was for kids and is bashing it for not being “kid-friendly” just cause it’s an animation movie, I think they were aiming for young adults/teenagers. This is sort of a coming up age story of how someone is trying to create their own path and discover more about themselves instead of having to confine to their parents’ expectations. As a young adult, I found this very relatable and the interactions between the characters are quite realistic…I saw a comment something about awkward pauses between characters, but I mean if you’re addressing a hard topic to talk about with your parent(s), I feel like awkward moments are natural.
Also, let’s also talk about how everyone kept saying this movie is about a boy falling in love with a boy. No it is not, this movie isn’t about a love story but even if it was, what is the big deal? I do not see an issue if there was any story of someone falling in love with whoever they want. It is normal for a boy to like a boy. It’s 2022…even if back in the day, homosexuality was not portrayed as much in media didn’t mean that it did not exist. This should be seen as a normal thing.
Give this movie a chance. You would be surprised how beautiful this piece is without reviews that do not correlate to the actual movie…reviews can be inaccurate and unreliable. Which is why after reading them, I immediately bought a ticket to see for myself. How would you know how good a movie is without seeing it with your own eyes? I would recommend everyone to give this movie a try and have their own thoughts about it.
