A have to watch for all people. Queen Charlotte is beautiful in every way.
Watching a story told where those that have created it have focused on showing characters self reflection, individual growth, healthy relationships, healthy communication, boundary setting, reciprocal relationships, leaves no doubt that this is media and art that is important.
They were able to show all of the above not just within romantic relationships, but within platonic and sexual relationships as well. This is actively creating new scripts for younger generations that champion communication and boundary setting, while teaching to relational aggression, stigmatization and shame, and highlighting the importance to advocate for oneself and what’s right.
To do that all effectively while also exploring the patriarchy, sexism, toxic ideas of masculinity, racism, ableism, mental health stigma, and even more systems of oppression leaves me with only two words. Breathtaking, and groundbreaking.
Shonda Rhimes is the best thing to happen to story telling. More of this! More funding of stories being told from the perspectives that have always been purposefully left untold. Shonda gaze > male gaze
Queen Charlotte is not a docuseries but fiction based on fact. Couldn’t recommend more!
