I absolutely love this book.
I was born in Chanute in the late 60s. My parents grew up there and were teachers at Royster at the time the author was a student there. My maternal grandparents lived their entire lives in Chanute and are laid to rest there. I did not grow up there, as my parents moved to Denver for job opportunities when I was 14 months old in late 1969, but I visited fairly frequently throughout my life for holidays, weddings, funerals, etc., so Chanute still feels like my home away from home to this day. I grew up hearing how great Barker's chili cones were, although, sadly, I never got to try one.
I have a great deal of love and affection for Chanute and the people there. The author does such a fantastic job of detailing why that place is so special.
Thank you so much, Mr. Winslow, for sharing this wonderful account of your childhood in and around Chanute. You really brought me back to my own experiences in Chanute and made me remember how proud I am to be from there.
