“One day at a time” is a show about a family that falls under the category of a sit-com. After watching it though, i realized that the writers and creators of the show actually touched on a lot of sensitive subjects, including: addiction, sexism, sexual harassment/assault, religion, depression, anxiety, dealing with being a single parent, being queer and even death. Somehow the show was able to touch on all of these topics without making the show unenjoyable, instead the show runners were able to keep the story lighthearted and fun to watch. In the series the characters always make sure that the others feel heard and seen even if it takes a few rough spots to understand what they're going through. Even in the very first episode we learn about the main character, Penelope's depression and PTSD as well as one of the more minor characters, Schneider, having struggles with alcoholism. Although we are shown the flaws of these people, their strengths are shown as well, making the characters more lovable and relatable as the show goes on.
