Loki as confused as Trump Just like how the US president is totally confused, making silly and flip-flop statements, director Loki here is completely lost. As absurd as this comparison sounds, that’s exactly how absurd you’ll feel after watching Coolie. How did my Thalaivar even agree to this? The clue was at the audio launch, he said he once dozed off during Loki’s 2.5-hour TV interview. I’m guessing the same thing happened here: Loki narrated the script, Thalaivar fell asleep, woke up and must have said yes! Shobin is not even part of the main story, but somehow, he gets maximum screen time! He jumps from a bike into a moving car to nab Shruti Haasan, and the car is slow enough so he can just hop in and grab her. Then he fights a hundred guys in a train, catches her, and in the very next shot he’s in the train driver’s cabin where he has apparently killed him. And where does he take the train? Just to the next station, where he casually steps off wearing a dog chain around his neck, strolling like it’s a Sunday market, and no one notices. And then Sathyaraj… a coolie a few years ago, now suddenly a scientist who invents a “machine” which is an old wooden chair, which we all thought would be some kind of time machine, but ends up being something totally silly! Only he can operate it. The entire international syndicate watches him daily and still can’t figure it out. But his daughter strolls in, pulls a few random levers, and boom, it works! Sorry Mr. Loki, but from Thalaivar’s very entry scene, it felt like you had some hidden agenda. Couldn’t you think of something more exciting or at least different? The plus side: Anirudh’s BGM is 100% fire. Thalaivar’s performance is 200% class, commitment, and style. He’s a joy to watch from start to finish. Please do watch the movie for Thalaivar, he has done his best. And you’ll have plenty of time this Sunday to decode Loki’s brain and do a deep analysis! I’m giving 5/5 for Thalaivar and 1/5 for Loki, because he at least put some effort into bringing out the vintage Rajinikanth.
