I’ve read nearly ALL Anne Rice and Rampling books. It is true the Vampires were not overtly “gay” in the books, but there were very strong homoerotic undertones. Vampires didn’t kiss or have sex in the books but they loved deeply and were very passionate with one another, male or female. If you want to talk disappointment, the movie was trash by comparison to the book, Tom Cruise cast as the young, angelic, almost feminine looking Lestat whose beauty was beyond comprehension? I don’t think so. But the movie was good, and entertaining as long as you don’t compare it to the book. This series is awesome, and yes, many differences from the book, but very well done, well acted and truly brings forth the romantic feel of these characters. I believe this would be how Anne Rice would have written the book had it been written in the 2020’s originally and not in the 1970’s. Adapt or die, these are the times we live in and this is for today’s audience. Anne Rice was always a friend and advocate when it came to the LGBTQ community. This series feels much more like the book than the movie, but if you pick them apart, detail for detail, you will always be disappointed.
