Leonard Bernstein is a wonderful subject for several moviesโinsanely talented and deeply complex. But this is not a wonderful movie. The first half (black and white) drags under the weight of the characters who seem unable to have an honest conversation and talk in clipped pleasantries. Worse, the story telling is unnecessarily allusive. One asks oneselfโoh I guess he moved out,but how long ago? Only one child speaksโwhat about the other two? It has some magnificent moments and clever cinematography, but in the end I donโt care deeply about any of the characters.
