If you go in with low expectations fearing a horrible movie, I have good news: it's only bad and not horrible.
The sequel trilogy could have been a passing of the baton from the old generation of heroes to the new generation.
Rather than the Battle of Endor being the greatest moment of the original heroes' lives, the sequels could have let our heroes enjoy some life and return to action as mentors to the next generation. At least Lando was allowed to do this.
Instead, we see the narrative of the new generation having to fix the mistakes of the previous generation. Luke went from believing in the power of family and redeeming Darth Vader to nearly murdering his young nephew!?
Finally, Star Wars was originally about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker. Now that IX's claim that "the saga will end" has come to fruition, we learn something... Star Wars wasn't about the Skywalkers, it is about the Palpatines. The Palpatine family arc is now the thread uniting the nine movies.
