This new Jack Ryan is in many ways a carefully constructed, modernized homage to Tom Clancy's famous character. The series stays true to the original archetype, while also coming across as fresh and interesting. In tune with modern times. However, it does seem like the subject of the season - a terrorist, is a miserable let-down to the formidable issues and adversaries of Tom Clancy's construction in the past.
Very soon, we are led to realize that isn't the case. The villain, while constructed haphazardly, seems interesting, and real. The efforts to fit this to binge-worthy content, makes several eye-roll inducing cliched themes, but the story flows, and grips. I wish this became a long-running series.
8 Episodes aren't nearly enough to do justice to the incredible promise of the world-building the writers have indulged in. I just wish Jack graduated to parlaying with the Russians, and Chinese, rather than pursuing some desert dwelling mercenary, who is still a great adversary.
