This movie reminded me a lot of Nightcrawler and The Departed but with less action and drama.
This is a standard Gyllenhaal film. It is not his worst movie but it is DEFINITELY NOT HIS BEST. Jake Gyllenhaal is able to demonstrate his excellence in psychological acting skills but this movie could not capture what I believe most viewers were looking for when they selected this film, and that is: A good story.
It was dramatic, but it was melodramatic. It was surprising, but many people could see the plot twists. It was cinematic, but not eye-catching. It had good music timing, but it was boring and monotonous.
Without the music swelling whenever there was a corner being turned in the story, no one would last more than 30 minutes through this film.
This isn't a new twist on an old story, it's not really putting Gyllenhaal's acting to the test, and it's not painting him as a character we aren't used to seeing. 7/10.
