I’m not sure why this film received such a low rating. My only explanation is that the people giving it a low rating are not people of color. As an African American woman who’s lived overseas for several years I can say, the situation Neve and her family find themselves in is not unusual. Many fair skin people of color have seen the advantages “passing” for white has had on their upward mobility in white society. I think it’s a film that makes you ponder what is means to be black, to be a mother and to be successful.
