A 600 page book needs to keep you yearning for more to keep you reading. This book was the epitome of anti-climax. The characters were endlessly frustrating, unlikeable and selfish with little to no redeeming qualities. Their backstories were tarred with violence and sadness which would usually invoke empathy, however, the writing was so all over the place, it was almost impossible to maintain a cohesive feeling about anything. After the ending left me enraged due to its lack of actual conclusion, I couldn’t help but relate to the many negative reviews on Amazon as people were as frustrated as I was by the absence of punctuation whenever the story is in Imelda’s POV. This led to an incredibly labour-intensive reading experience as you try to make sense of an already all-over-the-shop prose, but was a technique used by the author to try to convey her lack of education and lower class upbringing. All in all 10/10 would NOT recommend. An absolute time waster. There are many books I’ve read that though I didn’t particularly like the storyline or the characters, I could appreciate the writing. This book is not one of them.
