I think Anna Kendrick delivered a great performance, she has a great range as an actress. As her debut film in directing, I also think she delivered some clever scenes. One thing I felt was accomplished with this film was the being able to sense the creep factor! That hair on the back of your neck standing up kind of feeling. Few scenes I had felt that so intense as if Rodney Alcala were standing in front of me. The scenes where there are very few words but a change in demeanour, the way you see human eyes connect and know something is very very wrong, something sinister is about to happen!
These scenes didn't need to be huge scenes or have alot of dialogue to deliver that eerie feeling, that uncomfortably I feel we do have to endure at times in society, and often times as women. It can be subtle, small remarks, small looks., uncomfortable train rides, conversations etc. If Anna Kendrick was attempting to get that feeling to viewers, she delivered on this in my opinion.
I enjoyed the performances, my 3 star rating is due to confusion on why the film seemed to be based around Anna Kendrick's character and the dating game show. Neither of these events are necessarily important to the real story.
The young girl who was labelled as a run away, that's who I believe this film should have been based around. I would of liked to know her story more, she was incredibly clever to play on his emotional state after such an attack, to think and use human emotions to stay alive, and at her age. Now that's the story! Alternatively it could have also centered around the killer, the mind of the killer, how he worked and what was happening with him emotionally, I found it interesting that he seemed to react to kindness.
He targeted kindness, and after the attack on the young girl, those scenes...well it seemed that he was able to be manipulated (the manipulator manipulated). Into thinking he could do such an act to a woman or girl, and that a woman or girl could still possibly like him! That is some deep scenes that left me with more questions about the Rodney.
This really touched on some deeper areas, I had more questions about him that I feel really could have been explored. I understand not focusing the film around the killer as it would have taken from the vulnerability you feel with it centered around a female lead, probably would have been a well done mini series. To much to unpack in a 90 minute film.
