Overall disappointing, with some great moments
I'll keep my thoughts vague, because why write a review with spoilers in it: who is going to read it then?
The trailers depicted this installment in the franchise as a thrilling, grandiose, and satisfying end to the saga, and it delivered... but only sometimes. Absolutely, the film is impressive and exciting and thrilling and even spooky at times, and is certainly entertaining.
But critically, it is hardly fluid at all, and when it is it is woefully predictable. The storyboarding feels choppy, even if from a broad perspective the plot is alright (if not more or less the same worn plot of each installment since the first movie in 1993) This ailment is especially prevalent in the first act, which is difficult to enjoy because of how easy it is to be caught up in the implausibility of certain moments. Not whole scenes per say, just certain integral moments in a scene that choke the continuity of the story. Characters appear to act irrationally (yes even considering emotions) and feel at times very flat. Events seem random and out of nowhere, and the characters reactions to them seem poorly thought through, like each character is just going through the motions of a motion picture.
The worst flaw of the film is how characters or dinosaurs just show up places. We would see them clearly in one location, and several scenes later they are in a completely different place, with no possible or reasonable explanation for why they would be there and how they even got there at all. The explanations are startlingly absent, as if they were supposed to be included and just got cut, leaving an attentive viewer stunned as to how the scene even developed into what it is. I have several specific instances in mind where this crime takes place that are not hard to miss.
The characters themselves are alright. in the writing department, they nailed an angsty, eager-to-act-and-prove-herself Maisie, and Dr. Malcolm is delightful in his mannerisms and lines, which are delivered wonderfully. The other characters are about as we last left them in terms of writing, except, unfortunately, for Alan Grant. Why was he given the short straw, to be the brunt of the action. No longer depicted as a capable, determined and capable leader, he instead devolved into a more timid, self conscious, slow and frankly pathetic drag-along character. He seems to add nothing that any brand new side character couldn't, and it is perplexing and disappointing change of direction for him.
HOW both the exposition and resolution are presented is rather cheap and feels pretty lame, but they are very effective of both presenting the setting and capping the story, and at least WHAT is shown is thoughtful and interesting.
And thats really all to especially note. Everything else is a spoiler best experienced first hand or is just what was expected from a new Jurassic World. An entertaining film I wouldn't actively seek to see again, with many holes that keep it from entering my list of hallowed films, and will certainly keep it from winning any awards (unless things go really downhill in the world of cinema.)
