This is a film for grown-ups. I am older and understand, at least to a degree, the deep concepts brought to life in this movie. Good and evil are not clear-cut. Politics makes strange bed-partners. Affection and guile aren't mutually exclusive in relationships. The wide sweep of history isn't much determined by the wise or powerful. Self-interest takes many forms. Much human conflict is the result of misunderstanding. Regarding the action content, the brutality of the time and place is portrayed with realism. The emotions of the characters are superbly portrayed. The motives of some characters are not immediately obvious. There are several stories and the film switches between them. I love this type of film. I understand that some critics have said the film doesn't flow smoothly between the stories but I had no problem with this. Cloud Atlas switched between stories much faster and I loved that film as well. I especially recommend this film to young people. Young people who watch this film will certainly have a better understanding of this period than their peers. I'm looking forward to the next segment and I'll see this one again as well.
