I love this movie! I’ve seen it several times over the years, and every time it blows my head clean off! New insights reveal themselves with each viewing. I’m a huge movie fan, and this one has the rare combination of all my must-have elements for a truly great movie: an original storyline that challenges and surprises me, a stellar cast and impeccable acting, lots of heart, epic music, dashes of humor, and a moody suspense that keeps me at the edge of my seat. The tone is spooky and weird and confounding and wonderful. The direction, pacing, and editing all complement the story. The characters are complex. There is a love story, and redemption, and mystery, and a reluctant hero. And it all revolves around the extra special secret sauce for me: time travel! And Jake! What a performance! I can’t imagine anyone else in that role. The hallmark of a great movie all boils down to the way I feel while watching it—and especially how I feel after it’s over. This movie makes me feel like I’m on a great journey, and then grateful at the end, in a way I don’t completely understand. And it leaves me wanting more. I may never fully untangle everything that is going on in this movie, and that’s another thing I love about it—it doesn’t end by tying things neatly up in a bow.
