It was a super ordinary storytelling we've seen time and time again and writing wise it wasn't even good. It is a teen drama which doesn't really pick up the fairy part. I don't see the extraterrestrial kind of being in the characters. They whitewashed Musa and Flora (tried to cover Flora up by calling her Terra) and canceled another core member of the iconic squad, Tecna. They took the fairy out of the fairies by not even giving them Wings (winx). The main character doesn't feel like the main character because there is more emphasis on "Terra's Story". And bloom is unrelatable due to her anger problems. The series pulled the "black best friend" stereotype on Layla/Aisha by not giving her any other personality trait other than be-mothering Bloom. (They didn't even give her a love story) And Stella is really unlikable and vain. She is super mean and hostile towards the group but at the end everyone likes her all of a sudden. Terra is the typical "overweight girl" that struggles to fit in because of how she looks. Why couldn't they've just made a strong overweight (latina) girl who has different problems for once. I understand that Winx Saga isn't Winx Club, but it doesn't justify the boring dialogue. It's its own thing which has, characterwise, little to do with the original. (They behave differently and have different friendships and personalities, for example Stella and Bloom and their love triangle. ) On top of all of that, the costumes and outfits look like things 60year olds would wear, they don't fit at all and are incredibly uncreative.
Spoiler:
Non the less I have to say the plot twist at the end where the headmaster has herself killed by the dark fairy was very well portrayed and interesting. I wish the rest of the series was as catching as that scene.
I also liked the take on how Stella lost control of her powers, but that doesn't resemble the original Stella at all.
