It took me 24 hours to come to terms with this book. The writing is beautiful. The story, as I see it, is about two pathologically immoral girls. Fabienne is a genius, with no real feelings for anyone. Agnes serves as a tool for her use.
Agnes is harder to understand and is at times seemingly sympathetic. But she fails to object to the cruelty of Fabienne towards humans and animals. She feels no love for her family or would be friends. No gratitude to those who would help her. No regret towards those innocents they have harmed (including the Gardner). Only an obsession for Fabienne, her alter ego. This line is telling: “Earl loves me, and I love being married to him.”
I can’t say whether or not I liked this book, but I couldn’t put it down. And I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
