This was a terrible movie, a complete let down to the trilogy that came before it. I went to the cinema to watch this and came out feeling nothing but sheer remorse and guilt for the money and time wasted on this steaming pile of garbage.
To start with. the main villain (Gorr) is one of my favourite villains that marvel have managed to make. However, this served to make it more frustrating to me when the story boxed him in and removed and sort of menacing from his character. This was partially down to how they had decided to target this movie to just little kids, as this served only to box in the malice and hatred this character should have displayed. Furthermore, he did not give off the right Aire of his inner conflicts and seeming thought of himself as the hero. This could have been either down to Christian Bale or the more likely reason of bad directing.
My second, larger issue was the needless and seemingly just stupid travel to the city of the Gods which served no relevance to the movie other than as filler to waste time. This probably served more as the director’s interpretation of the world order and their thoughts of the world being a patriarchy. This is clearly seen through how it all fat men which are said to have “lost their ways” and “not be heroes after all”. This, however, is no excuse for the pitiful parts of the film consumed by the director’s political ideology.
My final issue was the confusing sub plot between Thor and the heroine (female Thor- Jane Foster). This was in my opinion very poorly done. While it did show how Thor had developed the maturity of Odin so that he could make the hammer do his bidding, the was quickly counteracted by the fact the hammer wouldn’t go to him. This was a huge plot hole and only served so that Janes character could in no way be tampered with… This is in my opinion the worst kind of plot armour. There is also a further plot hole developed at the end of ten movie as she sacrifices herself by moving across the universe in a sub second. Mjolnir did not in this Movie possess the means to do this, only storm breaker did. The writers desperate need got a woman to save the day while a man was helpless lead to this large and confusing idea as Jane seemingly shot a Bifrost out of her arse. As well as this, we are left unsure on how she leaned to become such an extraordinary fighter that had the same skill of Thor by having the hammer for a few years (possibly days) while he had been training from being a baby (as stated at the start of the film.) Moreover, the only touch towards a nonchild audience in this movie is when she talks about how she liked to see Thor naked. This took away from any idea of her being a steadfast, Heroine warrior and instead just like the moms watching who could not get enough of Chris Hemsworth’s body.
