Angie Kim's writing is sublime. What appears on the offset as a mystery/thriller about a father gone missing actually evolves into a story about a family. Peeling back the layers of family dynamics and asking the question can we truly know the people in our own family. A family drama sounds very reductive for the absolute incredible story that Kim has woven together so intricately; however, it really does encapsulate the best parts of Kim’s novel giving an almost too personal look at the inner thoughts and workings of an interracial Korean family. One that keeps you reading and hooked from the very first line. This is a book everyone must read.

This is a very fun read. Has a great mix of mystery, thriller, humor, and so many great female character. I was wonderfully surprised by this book and other should pick it up and give it a try.

Tobar decodes the meaning and history of "Latino" identity. Beautifully weaving the stories of his own life as a son to Guataemalan parents and the essays of his students. Tobar dissects the intersections of "Latino" identity and it's depictions in media and pop culture. As well as the tense relationship and history of the United States and Latin America. The book doesn't hold back in it's assessments and would most likely resonate with those who come from immigrant backgrounds of Latin America. Tobar's writing makes the book flow and easy to digest. A must read for anyone who values cultural diversity and study of race.
