Today I went to go see the movie The New Mutants. I was unsure of what kind of movie it would be other than the fact that the main characters would be mutants and that they were in some sort of conspiracy filled institution. What I saw can best be described as the darkest parts of the human condition when someone suffers an intense trauma and their fear of said trauma. Each character other than the main villain, suffers from some bad memory whether the origin of it is a mistake or the result of being victimized by others. Regardless the main character is a young woman whose ability literally allows her to manifest every person's worst trauma into a physical form literally forcing these people to face their most horrifying memories with real world consequences. What happens is extraordinary however as the movie progresses each person owns up to their greatest fears, mistakes and memories and confronts them until they eventually find the strength to fight back and vanquish their fears. The trauma ever present but its crippling effects lessened to a great extent. The main character ultimately discovers that not only is she the most powerful among them but also the person with the most wisdom as she learns how to confront her own fears and put them to rest acknowledging its existence but refusing to allow it to rule her life. In the end, by relying on each other, they overcome the crippling effects of their trauma and become a family they all desperately needed. People who can accept them for who they are mistakes, flaws, trauma, scars and all. They cannot betray one another because they know everything important about one another. Everything that matters is within those five. And within those five lies the potential to birth freedom of both spirit and mind.
