Love the story, should inspire those who feel held back by dysfunctional family circumstances. It bothered me that grandmother would look so old because if she had daughter at 13, she should have only been 47-48 yrs old - but that’s the way she looked in real life. I don’t think it emphasized strongly enough what words and influences steered JD into a better direction... too many simple follow in parents footsteps - ways, traditions, and blame it on the parents. Was the Dad’s absence ever discussed? Will have to read the book to give a more thorough review, it might have the answers.
