First and foremost, yes. This is a great movie! I highly recommend it.
To be honest, when I first saw the trailer for this movie I had really low expectations. I thought that it was just yet another forgettable sequel that no one asked for, created just to make the studio some extra money. But after hearing that it's actually really good and seeing all the memes about it, I gave in and watched it myself. I have to say, this movie is great! I loved it!
With all the cheap, soulless cash-grab movies that studios are spitting out these days, milking every last successful franchise for all they're worth, I have to say this well-done, high effort sequel was REALLY refreshing to see. Heck, refreshing is an understatement!
I'm glad they didn't abandon the edgy, more adult-oriented humor and themes that made the Shrek franchise so unique (that being said, this movie isn't for little kids. It's a Shrek spinoff after all, so make sure you don't mind your kids seeing scary scenes and mild language before taking them to see it. Most of the one-star reviews for this movie are angry parents whose little kids got too scared, so I thought I should put that out there. Remember, animated =/= for kids).
I can't say much about the movie itself without spoiling, but I'll try to describe it. The new characters aren't annoying thankfully, they're pretty funny and likeable in my opinion actually. While some people dislike the change in animation style, I actually love it personally. The choppy low frame rate and bright contrasting colors of the fight scenes really made them intense and fun to watch. The story was great too, Puss had a character arc that was really satisfying to watch (I won't spoil though)!
And the main villain, omg. I need a whole paragraph just to talk about how cool he is. He's the main reason the movie is so scary at times, every scene involving him is supposed to give the viewer anxiety, and boy does he do just that. He really helps convey to the viewer just how scared of death Puss is. All it takes is hearing his whistle to turn a fearless legend into a trembling scaredy cat. The harsh shadows and ominous red lighting around him make it so anxiety-inducing and I love it.
Overall, 5⭐ movie, I highly recommend it!
