I have not read the books, and had no idea what this was about going in. I was captivated immediately, and the lure just gets stronger the more I watch. Both thought-provoking on deep and complex levels if your mind is open to such things, or great entertainment in the Sci Fi genre if you want to lose yourself into a cool series for a while, give it a try. I always appreciate something a little new and different, and even if you're just geeky about special effects and aliens, it's still interesting and unique.
