Came for the thriller/horror genre, stayed for David Thewlis.
I was excited for this film but found myself feeling nauseated by the relentlessly pretentious dialogue and narration from the “unnamed female” within the first 20 minutes. Things finally started to get semi-interesting when they finally got to Jake’s family home. His parents were interesting to observe and due to the jarring movements forward and backward in his parents’ aging it became clear that we were witnessing the inner workings of someone processing their memories whether they be real or imagined. I can appreciate the subtle nods to the old man’s character throughout the film, tying things back together, but I walked away from this film regretting spending 2+ hours on a film that was somehow both depressing and lacking in substance. I guess, like the landscape paintings, the author/director wants to evoke a feeling, but I’m not so interested in the feeling this film gave me.
