as an awkward asian girl growing up myself, this movie was so endearing and nostalgic and made me feel so seen. it's a fun, expressive and colorful movie that is packed with incredible visuals!!
i've been reading a lot of negative reviews regarding this movie and they have all been so upsetting. i don't understand what's inappropriate about a movie discussing periods, or mei drawing "suggestive" cartoons of devon, the daisy mart boy. in fact, it was SO painfully accurate to how i used to draw boys i found cute and hide them secretively LOL
what i've mainly seen is that there's a "target audience" to this movie and a lot of white GROWN adults even, have been saying it isn't enjoyable because they can't "relate" to any of the experiences. I'M SORRY?? a movie doesn't have to be relatable in order to be enjoyable. just because you can't relate to it doesn't mean that you can leave such nasty comments under a movie that is supposed to uplift kids and help them find themselves. it's obviously not catered to you, so why does it matter if you find it enjoyable or not??
that's all i have to say mostly. i very much recommend this movie, it's delightful, the songs are super catchy, and it's such a heartwarming story. <3
