I have been married and divorced. This movie truly depicts how love can be lost and how ugly communication can become once the decision to severe the ties and divorce have been made. What I was most moved by is how the boy’s needs are overlooked as each adult fights for their needs. The part that most stung me was when the Dad is driving in the car. The son is telling him how he likes LA better, and the Dad doesn’t listen to his son and counters with what he loves about New York. And then the Dad says to the Mom when she says the son prefers LA that he is just mirroring what she wants. This subtle messaging is such an important lesson to adults that kids have needs and opinions that are real and should not be overlooked. Divorce unfortunately breaks the bond between two parts to collaborate in the best interest of a child.
