When I started watching the series I thought it was overly preachy, but that's par for the course these days. I kept watching it for the wardrobe details and the set props. I grew up during the same time period and was impressed by the attention to visual detail, After episode 3, I decided to read the book. Big mistake. The book is so much better than the series. Other reviewers have said it better than I could. The series is related to the book only in the usage of character names. My suggestion is to read the book (preferably) OR watch the series. Watching the series may be better for those not familiar with the visual nuances of the 50s and 60s. I liked the dog much better in the book.
