"There's before bones and all ... and after ..." So says the creepy character Jake in the movie and so say all of us.
Not as unsettling as the early reviews had suggested, one classic jump-scare which had me looking around the theatre to see if anyone else had been caught unawares, and heartfelt performances by both the snack (#spoiler no pun intended) that is Timothee Chalamet and the lead, Taylor Russell. A couple of scenes where Chalamet's performance actually had me crying but, while he is mesmerising to watch, IMO not a performance bigger or more delicately nuanced than Beautiful Boy.
Chalamaniacs will enjoy this, Russell's fans will enjoy this and, I think, anyone who fancies a road-trip romance will enjoy it as well. I do wish
Luca Guadagnino would linger more on shots of his cast - but that seems to be his style. Is this his best work? I don't think so, but then he has set such a high bar that even on an average day he is still a cut above most. All that said - did I enjoy it? Yes I did. Did it do justice to Camille DeAngelis' source material? Mostly. I did think her ending was far superior.
Is it worth your movie-going dollars? Yes. Is it a classic in the vein of 'Call Me By Your Name'? Probably not.
