This powerful documentary made me think hard about the struggles black women face. I've seen the other two films Amy Ziering and Kirby
Dick made about sexual abuse on college campuses and in the military and I cried in both. This was different. In "On the Record," the focus was on one brilliant, charismatic black woman who allows herself to be fully accessible to the audience. We are right with her when she makes the decision to go public. Drew Dixon's passion and energy remind me of Jodie Foster's character in "The Accused." Foster won an Academy Award for playing a bright but un-educated woman who was gang-raped and whose life was upended because she wanted justice. Millions of people have seen the film since its 1988 release but it did nothing to stop the widespread and on-going attacks on women. However, with "On the Record," highlighting the issues specific to black women, now part of the Ziering/Dick canon, I think the "Me, Too!" movement will have a fighting chance. This movie is a must see!!
