Absolutely suks.
Here is some verbatim dialog from the film:
Mother, to her son: "Well, life goes on."
Son replies: "How dark must a secret be for a man to kill himself rather than speak?"
Mother: "There are some mysteries that should never be uncovered."
If you find this screen writing to be fresh and intriguing, then you're in luck! 1 hr and 45 minutes of this sort of writing awaits you. Otoh, if you think this writing is so banal and pretentious that it's unintentionally FUNNY, then don't hit the play button.
Good period costume dramas, such as "Barry Lyndon" and "Liaisons Dangereuses" (the Malkovich version), make you feel you understand something about how people lived in the place and time depicted, yes?
This film doesn't DO that. Set against the background of the Spanish Inquisition, this is just a bad detective story...only with sword fights!
I never heard of this film's writer/director so I researched him. He's made exactly 2 films, & this was the last of the 2. Apparently he hasn't worked at all in the last 15 years. If you watch "Day of Wrath," you'll understand there's a reason for that.
Brian Blessed ("I, Claudius") gives an interesting characterization in a supporting role, but Sir Brian ain't nearly enuf to save this.
