May I begin by highly recommending, you watch this classic cinematic, family favorite work of art. Your household will applaud you for introducing them to timeless cinema, the way it was meant to be experienced.
This sundance winning film featured two girls in a timeless wardrobe of shiny purple fabric and vertical blue stripes. These wardrobe choices made me reminisce on my days as an artistic teenager in highschool. Every outfit change had me on the edge of my seat. Some outfit changes brought me close to tears. In one of the first scenes, Camilla transforms Penny's costco looking swimsuit into a fashion models version of baywatch meets a victoria's secret angel. The professional, swanky yet chic styling of these girls left me speechless.
The plot of this movie is as clear as the waters of Malibu on an overcast afternoon right after you have surfed all morning and now you don't know if you should tell Keanu Reeves you're having sexual intercourse with cousins in his house or if you should just go back to art school. There is CLEARLY 3 rising plot points, a climatic plot twist and 3 points of resolution.
Featured actresses Molly Ringwald (The breakfast club), Keanu Reeves (John Wick), Pamela Anderson (SPF-18) and Dolly Parton (Hannah Montana {good golly miss Dolly, season 1 ep 16}) outcompeted their roles in every other performance, but the show stopping actor was Uncle Steve played by Sean Russel Herman. He played a crucial role as surf uncle, therapist and most importantly friend to Penny, Camilla, Johnny and Ashe.
If you don't watch this movie you are cheating yourself and disrespecting the good name of country music.
As an avid lucid dreamer myself, I feel properly represented by this oscar nominated film. When Johnny slips away into his lucid dream, I feel right at home. This scene brings me back to highschool when my parents left me at my famous uncle's house, unsupervised to sleep with "my girlfriend, her cousin and their camera." The vivid images couldn't be more accurate to my experience lucid dreaming. Johnny's girlfriend's cousin proceeds to put him to sleep in the middle day through only sheer will. He floats into an 8 bit world of magic and Johnny's decapitated head flashes on the screen and he whispers "I'm dreaming" to indicate the dream has began. He then runs shirtless through the dream world to discover his true purpose in life.
This movie helped me discover the true direction of my life; I want to be an actress just like this well selected group of teenagers. After viewing an hour and fifteen minutes of a performance akin to the modern Daniel Day Lewis, I yearn to perform such a touching display and inspire others like Noah Centineo did ito myself in SPF-18.
