incredible ability to be inside the souls of each of these characters and to slowly compose a very compelling story - in many ways the way he moves back and forth through time reminds me of Faulkner where the layers of knowledge peel back like old paint - also like European movies where the end is not some pretty bow but sufficiently tied up to finish the telling
