This game challenges the player in a way no game ever has before. For some players, it may be too much to ask of them. The game is kicked off by an event that has angered and hurt every fan of this game in existence. As it was supposed to. Nothing else would be enough to motivate the events that follow. Our emotions are in line with Ellie’s. And both the player and her begin down quite a dark path of vengeance. But at the same time, the game manages to weave in a storyline that (temporarily) gives us back those beloved characters, and answers the burning questions we were left with after the first game. As well as giving moments of levity and nostalgia. These are the most precious moments of the game.
Joel’s decision in the first game was incredibly morally ambiguous. It was both the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. Such a monumental choice was bound to have consequences. But not only did he rob the world of the possibility of a vaccine, he took a father from a daughter. And so began his reckoning.
The thing that is too much for some players, is the game asking them to consider perspective. Not even wrong or right, but simply “why?”
This is understandably difficult when the person who’s perspective you're asked to consider is someone who has taken the most important part of your life, but the game gives the player all the tools to make it possible. It is so hard not to see the full picture by the end of the game I am amazed some are still blind to it.
The amount of mixed emotions, or even singular, primal emotions this game has caused me to feel are vast. I have never been moved to tears so much by a video game in my life. And I have never been made to admire and respect, even like, a character I had set out to hate.
This story is one of love at its very core. It is what drives people more than anything else. And it is something that people will do almost anything for. It can give a person everything, and it can also take everything from them. It can also be lost just as easily as it’s found, with the flawed nature of humans inhibiting them from realizing that it’s happening until it’s too late.
This game is stunning, with dare I say unmatched graphical quality, excellent acting, writing, and characters that feel like real people. It will undoubtedly be talked about for a very long time.
If you play this game, please do so with an open mind, and save any conclusions or verdicts until the very end.
