The portrayal of the Chinese Cultural Revolution is quite fascinating, but the rest of the show gets caught in the usual Netflix pitfall of iffy character development. Many scenes and character emotions come off as unnatural and don't really resonate with the adult audience. Considering many of the showrunners are the same people who did Game of Thrones, these flaws are probably just Netflix pandering to their younger audiences. The show would likely be better off it it airs on HBO, but that would mean a smaller audience, so it seems we're stuck with what we have.
