It’s virtually a clone of the first movie, except this time it’s on the sea and Jake has a family. The scenes of the characters learning about a new culture are the same as the original, sometimes shot for shot, just with different characters. They couldn’t even be bothered to make a new main villain.
The last half of the movie is far too drawn out and repetitive to the point of destroying any suspense. Their attempts to invoke emotional attachment via their generic ‘family sticks together’ message fall flat and, thematically, it’s all over the place.
I won’t argue that it’s an absolutely beautiful movie. As visually stunning you’d expect. Just don’t go into it hoping to get anything worthwhile from the plot. Overall, it feels like a very expensive cash grab. I will never understand how in 14 years they didn’t manage to come up with an original plot.
