It almost doesn't make sense that A Girl Called Eddy's second album, released an eye-popping sixteen years later, is as good as it is. Against seemingly all odds, Erin Moran rose from the ashes of the luminous heartbreak that was AGCE's debut to create a decisive, deliberate album of exquisitely crafted songs no less sentimental and emotional but with a renewed spirit and resolve, augmented by perfectly pastiche big-brass backings that in the hands of lesser musicians would sound trite or thread-bare. Luckily for us, Moran's Bacharach-soaked songwriting leans into that retro nostalgia with such earnestness that we have no choice but to acknowledge the sincere emotional power that rests within its aesthetic. An utterly phenomenal return--these sixteen years have absolutely been worth it.

Incredibly ambitious and high-octane, with more laugh-out-loud humor than Aster has provided in previous films. The revelations in the third act, though, are unfocused and blow too many holes in the previous two-plus hours' events--including, criminally, rendering the incredible animations by Cristobal León and Joaquin Cociña essentially irrelevant. Cast and performances are excellent, though, as is the visual composition overall.
