What an incredible narrative- I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn't just another historical fiction with an interwoven love story throughout my reading. I cannot speak highly enough of the historical insights of yet another front to WWII, and the inspiration of Joska's love, Kuba's defiance, and Fela's hope. I feel like a better part of humanity by knowing these tales- with disbelief that so many things could happen to just one person for each of the characters (which are actual people!). Gracious thanks to Henry Michalski and everyone who motivated him to see this through.
