I have been watching K-dramas on Netflix, which immersed me in foreign cultures. So, tried this one of Orthodox Jewish people in Israel.I was expecting to be educated, converted, convinced as to the superiority of this religion, but no, was pleasantly surprised that the setting is only the context for the human drama that we see everywhere.
Impressed with the main character Shulem, his acting, character, who uses religion as it suits his human foibles and need to guide and protect his family. In the end love for family over rides arbitrary rules of religion which can be interpreted as you please and hope. Impossible relationships, desires, scruples, staying just barely this side of laws of the heart,
Loved it. Binge watched it, and found the Hassidic Jews and their world endearing. Side effect- developed craving for bread, pita, goulash, soup, cheesecake and pastry!
