Disclaimer: I do not condone anti-semitism. This book made me cry and feel like I did after I read The Giver. BUT you should definitely give it a read- just be prepared to question the characters' actions and to not be so simple as to put anyone into the category of hero or villain. Now, for the review:
This play is one of my favorites, although I recognize it's complicated. The characters and their choices can be interpreted dozens of ways, and it's one of the books that keep me up at night thinking about it. If you're into questioning how ideas of morality have changed over the centuries and what the value of teaching controversial literature and history is in the school system, this is your book. WAIT. Don't click away. This is also your book if you like jokes, puns, and smart women. Who may or may not be manipulative sociopaths bent on having everyone in debt to them. Um. In short, READ THIS. It's complicated, but it's also funny and thought-provoking and, in my opinion, one of Shakespeare's best. PLUS THERE'S ANOTHER GAY ANTONIO.
