I like this SF movie a lot and better on second viewing than the first time. Natalie Portman is excellent as one of a team of scientists trying to figure out the mystery of a shimmering area of land from which nothing emerges alive. Since the opening shot reveals that whatever arrived came angling in from space, we are left to imagine our own theory of what's happening in the shimmer. There are some answers finally, but the ride to get there is first rate with some great animal effects and a couple episodes of violence. It's a Sci-Fi / horror film in a sense with a dark edge that I like a lot. I have my own ideas of what the shimmer would be and it's not at all out of the realm of possibility in broad strokes, so don't be put off.
